ESB has been involved in generating power since it built the first major power plant at Ardnacrusha, Co Clare, in the late 1920's. And now the company is at the leading edge of power generation with its newest plants, including the latest Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant at Poolbeg in Dublin, and a joint venture plant with Statoil at Ringsend.

Two new state of the art Peat Generating Stations in Lanesborough (Lough Ree Power), Co Longford, and Shannonbridge (West Offaly Power), Co. Offaly have just been recently commissioned.

The company has extensive expertise in operating modern electricity plants, having been the operator of the first independent power plant in Britain at Corby since the early 1990s. ESB introduced a CCGT power station at North Wall in the early 1980's and it was the first station using this modern technology in Europe.

The Electricity Supply Board has developed leading experience in operating power stations both in Ireland and worldwide and has highly skilled operations and maintenance personnel.

The Irish market is now open to competition. With the existing Independent Power Producers and with more expected to build plant over the next few years, ESB expects it to be an active and competitive market.
