Fáilte Ireland East and Midlands was established in July 2006, following the decision of the Minister for Arts, Sports and Tourism Mr John O’Donoghue TD to transfer the functions of the Regional Tourism Authorities to Fáilte Ireland. The objective is to increase the focus on addressing the key strategic challenge of achieving an improved regional spread so that all areas of the country can share in tourism’s benefits and to ensure a strong and sustainable tourism industry.
In 2005, almost 1.8 million visitors came to the East and Midlands – approximately half from overseas and half from the rest of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Tourist spend brought €416 million of revenue to the region, making it one of the most important economic sectors in East and Midlands. Almost 50% of overseas holidaymakers to the East and Midlands arrived in Ireland via a British airport, while 24% arrived via Mainland Europe. 46% were aged more than 45 years and the most popular accommodation used in the region were guesthouses / B&Bs, staying with friends or family or hotels.
