Coras Iompair Eireann (CIE) is the main authority for the provision of public transport within the state.

CIE is spilt into three divisions: Iarnrod Eireann - Irish Rail, Bus Eireann and Dublin Bus. Iarnrod Eireann operates passenger and freight trains across the region. The towns of Athlone, Tullamore, Portarlington and Clara are served by the Dublin - Galway line, while Portlaoise is served by the Dublin - Limerick - Cork line. Longford, Edgeworthstown and Mullingar are served by the Dublin - Sligo Line. Bus Eireann provides international, inter-city, provincial, rural and school services throughout the country. Athlone and Longford act as two centres from which a number of services operate daily. These two centres connect the Midlands to Galway, Westport, Ballina, Sligo, Derry, Belfast, Dundalk, Dublin, Waterford, Cork, Kerry and Limerick, serving all major towns en route.
