Athlone Institute of Technology was established in 1970 and has developed rapidly since its foundation. To facilitate this growth the original building has been extended on several occasions within its 42-acre landscaped campus, which is situated off the Dublin Road approximately 2.5 kms from the town centre. The main campus building currently houses the Schools of Business, Engineering, Humanities and Science; Student Services; the Library; the Information Technology Centre; the main student canteen facilities and the Institute’s administration offices. A new Engineering Building costing €40 million is shortly due to commence construction. The Institute’s Design programmes are delivered on the Northgate Street Campus in the town centre. The Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure building is a landmark on the main campus. The Institute’s East Campus is the location of the new Nursing and Health Sciences Building, the Midlands Innovation and Research Centre and the recently refurbished Engineering

The John Count McCormack Centre on the Main Campus is a multipurpose building used as a sports complex, a venue for student social events, and for large gatherings of the student body such as examinations, Freshers’ Week exhibitions, registration and graduation. ‘Scribes’, the student bar and social centre is also housed in this building as is the Institute’s stateof-the-art fitness suite. The Institute has on the main campus a number of high-quality playing pitches catering for various sports, including Gaelic football/hurling, soccer and rugby. Extensive off-campus modern student accommodation is available within walking distance of the Institute. The Institute currently offers an extensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to over 5,000 staff and students, which has been a factor in attracting many industries to the town and the region. It is an important contributor to the local economy and to the shaping of Athlone’s future.
